Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over Christmas and New Year. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are ready to step up, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand militants in both countries.
