Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents across the country.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and residences washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” an emergency official stated. “A father also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

By Monday, officials confirmed at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon early Monday while moving over the main island, home to the national capital.

Per meteorological authorities, its maximum winds dropped from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts peaked at over 170 mph.

The storm system is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Relief and Assessment

The country’s emergency management agency indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction on buildings and roads.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Recent Context and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following Typhoon Kalmaegi, that claimed hundreds of lives with dozens unaccounted for before moving on toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted recently over risks to emergency personnel.

Global warming is making cyclones more intense and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Researchers have found that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events result in an average of millions in dollars in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared a state of emergency on Thursday due to the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
